A Shift Towards Domestic Low-Enriched Uranium
The U.S. currently imports two-thirds of the low-enriched uranium (LEU) it needs to power its nuclear plants. As of today, Russia is the major exporter of LEU to the U.S., a number that will go to zero in the coming years as the Uranium Import Ban goes into effect. To get ahead of this, the U.S. Department of Energy has announced that they are investing $2.7 billion to bolster domestic enrichment services. This funding will support the U.S. initiative to expand nuclear growth in the energy sector.
“President Trump is catalyzing a resurgence in the nation’s nuclear energy sector to strengthen American security and prosperity,” said Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. “Today’s awards show that this Administration is committed to restoring a secure domestic nuclear fuel supply chain capable of producing the nuclear fuels needed to power the reactors of today and the advanced reactors of tomorrow.”
LEU is uranium with a higher concentration of the fissile isotope, Uranium-235 (U-235) which ends up being around 3-5% and is used for most commercial nuclear power plants. High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) contains a higher concentration around 5-20% U-235 which is used for more advanced reactor designs. These fissile uranium concentrations are accomplished by enriching natural uranium by separating out Uranium-238. Russia enriches around half of the global LEU, followed by France and China. The U.S. aims to expand production capacities domestically to lessen the dependency on other countries as the race for nuclear power generation drives on.
Increased Funding to Uranium Enrichment Facilities
The U.S. DOE announcement of $2.7 billion dollars will expand funding for enrichment production in the United States. Three companies stand to benefit most from this – Centrus, General Matter, and Orano Federal Services – along with six others. Each of the three company will receive $900 million to build out their enrichment capabilities. These companies will be required to meet strict milestone to continue to receive distribution of these funds. Some of these requirements include job creation and enrichments facilities buildouts. This federal funding aims to spur additional investments from the private entities to further build on the domestic nuclear fuel supply.
Urano is currently working to build out a LEU facility in Oak ridge. This federal funding will accelerate the development of this $5 billion facility. Their mission is to provide a competitively price U.S.-based production of enriched uranium for American nuclear reactors. Their Project IKE facility is building out rapidly utilizing already existing centrifugal technology to enrich uranium. They also intend to construct the facility to allow for modular build outs so Orano can meet the future demands of nuclear fuel production. Orano has decades of experience with nuclear fuel enrichment making the DOE investment powerful for American production.
Centrus was awarded federal funding with the intent to expand upon their uranium enrichment facility in Piketon Ohio. The project build out will support thousands of American jobs and expand uranium enrichment of their current plant. They intend to build out their HALEU production and has secured LEU purchase commitments from utilities already, demonstrating their current position as a powerhouse for nuclear fuel production.
