Last Energy, a US startup, plans to build a micro reactor in Wales that they claim will cost below 400 million USD. The reactor aims to provide local customers with clean energy by the year 2027.

These micro reactors are the first of many to help Wales reach their net zero carbon emissions goal. This will aim to reach the UK goal to reduce emissions to 52% of their 2021 production by 2027 and 78% a decade beyond that.

The firat reactor site is set to be built on a former coal plant… a great symbol of an energy transition for clean power generation. This location is ideal for local power transmission to commercial industrial customers. This helps in providing consistent and reliable energy to customers burdened with outages and price fluctuations from the grid power market.

The Last Energy micro reactor design is capable of providing 20MW of elctric power. Four of these will be installed at a site to generate a total of 80MW of power for customers.

The reliance on a single micro reactor facility to power industrial processes on a local scale will provide for consistent and lower cost of electricity per KWh. This will provide a competitive advantage for these industrial processes who will be less effective by global market fluctuations.

Last Energy believes that micro reactors are the answer to lower starting costs compared to large scale reactors and a quicker return on investments. With this, more nuclear power plants can be built to spread to a larger network of customers who are interested in a power source capable of a never-ending supply of clean energy.
