Moderator

A material used to slow down the speed of neutrons produced by the fission reaction to allow for further absorption of the neutrons by the fuel. Nuclear fuel requires the neutrons to be slowed down before reacting. These neutrons are called thermal neutrons. Examples of different types of moderators used in nuclear reactors are ordinary water (light water), heavy water, graphite, and liquid beryllium.
