Coolant
A fluid that removes heat from the reactor. As heat is generated from the fission reaction, this fluid circulates through the fuel rods to extract the energy and transfer it to mechanical energy and then electrical energy. Examples of the different types of coolants used in nuclear reactors are ordinary water, carbon dioxide, and liquid sodium.
